The Pope Francis Rescue Home began as a vital response to the alarming increase in child sexual abuse cases in Kenya’s coastal regions of Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu counties. Founded in 2015 under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Malindi (CDoM), the Home was inspired by the need to provide immediate, safe spaces for children whose homes were no longer secure. In a personal discussion, Pope Francis gave his blessing for this noble cause, allowing the Home to carry his name as a symbol of hope and compassion. The Home is run with the administrative collaboration of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (MSOLA).
Since its inception, PFRH has admitted over 848 cases of abuse, offering temporary shelter, medical care, counseling, and education to children as young as 2½ years old. By 2024, 822 children had been reintegrated into their communities or placed in safer environments under the guidance of Kenya’s Department of Children Services. Our work not only focuses on healing but also on restoring dignity and self-worth to survivors.
PFRH remains committed to addressing the root causes of child abuse, including poverty, illiteracy, and cultural practices. By enhancing our programs, expanding our reach, and building sustainable solutions, we aim to continue being a beacon of hope for vulnerable children. Our focus on both prevention and intervention ensures that every child has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and achieve their dreams in a safe and supportive world.
Together, we can create a future where no child is left behind.
